Privacy Notice
This site is mine — I’m Nerys Parry, based in Ottawa, Canada. This notice explains, in plain language, what information is collected here, why, and what you can do about it.
What this site collects
- If you use the contact form: the name, email address, and message you provide.
- If you sign up for the mailing list: your email address.
- For everyone, only if you consent to analytics cookies: general information about how the site is used, such as which pages are visited and how visitors arrive at the site.
That’s everything. There’s no user account system, no comments section, and nothing tracked beyond what’s described in this notice.
Contact form
If you use the contact form, the name, email address, and message you provide are sent directly to me so I can reply. That information isn’t used for anything else, and isn’t shared with anyone outside of what’s needed to respond to you.
Your message passes through Cloudflare, which runs this website, on its way to my email inbox, which is hosted by Fastmail. Neither company uses it for anything other than delivering it.
To keep out automated spam, the contact page uses Cloudflare Turnstile, a security check that usually runs invisibly in the background. It looks at technical signals from your browser (such as your IP address and how the page is loaded) only to tell people apart from automated programs. It doesn’t read what you type into the form, and Cloudflare states it uses this information only for that security check.
Mailing list
If you sign up for the mailing list, your email address is stored with Kit, the service used to send updates. Signing up is how you give consent to receive those emails; you can withdraw that consent and unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email you receive. Your address is never sold or shared with anyone else.
Cookies
This site uses cookies — small files stored in your browser — in two ways:
- One small, essential cookie simply remembers whether you’ve agreed to analytics cookies or not, so you’re not asked again every time you visit. It doesn’t contain any personal information.
- Analytics cookies (from Google Analytics) are only set if you consent via the banner at the bottom of the page. These help tell visits apart from one another so the traffic numbers make sense; they don’t identify you by name. If you decline, none of these are set, and nothing else about how the site works for you changes.
You can clear cookies at any time through your browser’s own settings.
Where your information is stored
Cloudflare (hosting, and the contact form’s spam check), Fastmail (my email), Kit (the mailing list), and Google Analytics are all companies based outside Canada, and the servers they use to store and process information may be located outside Canada too. That means information collected through this site may be subject to the laws of whatever country it happens to be stored in, in addition to Canadian law. This is standard for small websites using established providers rather than something specific to this site.
How long information is kept
-
Your mailing list answer is recorded with the message. The form asks whether you want to join, and neither answer is chosen for you. If you say yes, the message I receive notes the question you were asked, the answer you gave, the date and time, and the network address you sent it from. That record exists so I can show that you asked to hear from me, which Canada’s anti-spam law expects me to be able to do. If you say no, only the answer is noted.
-
Contact form messages are kept for no longer than twelve months, and usually much less — only as long as needed to respond and follow up, then deleted.
-
Mailing list addresses are kept for as long as you’re subscribed, and removed once you unsubscribe.
-
Analytics information is retained according to Google Analytics’ and WebSignalytics’ own standard settings, which this site doesn’t separately control.
Your privacy rights
Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA) gives you the right to:
- ask what personal information is held about you, and get a copy of it;
- ask for a correction if something is wrong;
- withdraw your consent at any time — unsubscribe from the mailing list, or decline/withdraw analytics cookie consent.
To do any of these, reach out through the contact page. If you’re not satisfied with the response, you can also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children’s privacy
This site isn’t directed at children, and it doesn’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.
